Horticulturist

You will report to the Project Coordinator – High Value Projects. Your role will comprise cultivation, maintenance and management of plants, trees and other vegetation within various projects. This role requires a deep understanding of plant biology, soil management, pest control and landscaping techniques to ensure the health, growth and aesthetic appeal of the horticultural displays. 

This role requires excellent communication skills as you’ll collaborate with various people such as construction workers, supervisors, architects and engineers. In order to succeed, you must anticipate, interpret, inspect, record, report, advise, and guide, help reduce risk, provide guidance on health and safety matters and assist in getting it right the first time.

Horticulturist Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in landscape design and taking the lead role in landscape design implementation. 
  • Ensuring proper maintenance of grassy areas, plants  and other vegetation through mowing, edging, fertilising, pruning, aerating lawns and continuous assessment of plant health and stability.
  • Assisting in design and implementation of irrigation and water management systems to ensure that vegetation receives adequate water. 
  • Ensuring proper plant cultivation and care/management from nursery,  planting to maturity by ensuring proper watering, fertilization and pest control to promote healthy growth and development.
  • Identifying and managing pests, diseases, weeds and other disorders that affect plants/grass and other vegetation by employing integrated pest management techniques and preventive measures.
  • Assisting in the implementation of hardscape elements like pathways and patios, water features, drainage outfalls and lighting.
  • Taking the lead role in selection and recommendation of various plant types appropriate for specific locations. 
  • Conducting soil tests to determine nutrient deficiencies, understanding soil composition and its impact on plant growth and advising on appropriate enrichment  and improvement methods to provide optimal conditions for plant growth.
  • Developing and implementation of plant/seedlings procurement, planting, irrigation and management/maintenance plans. 
  • Other assignments as required.

Job Requirements

  • In-depth understanding of horticultural practices and a proven exemplary track record in plant cultivation, landscape design and plant health management.
  • Practical skills in planting, pruning, grafting, and other horticultural techniques.
  • Attention to detail and observational skills for plant health assessment.
  • Environmental awareness and commitment to sustainable practices.
  • Knowledge of pest and disease management techniques.
  • Strong understanding of plant biology, soil science, and plant nutrition.
